Available Expedition Positions

Camp Orkila hires on a rolling basis and will continue to accept applications until all positions are full. Hiring for the 2017 season will begin in October of 2016. There are two steps to apply for a position with the Teen Expedition Program. 

First, begin by submitting an outdoor resume or log book to Jordan Bright if you do not have an outdoor resume or logbook you can download this template. An outdoor resume or logbook is required for your application to be considered. We are a novice friendly program and value all experience levels - from day hiking and short outdoor excursions to multi-week expeditions. Your interest and enthusiasm for working with teens in the outdoors is what counts the most!

Leadership Development Institute Trip Leader

Starting at $42/day
Minimum age 21 (strongly preferred)

The Leadership Development Institute (LDI) Instructor is responsible for implementing a program that focuses on peer leadership, teamwork and youth development for teens grades 9-11. Each session is 15 days long and includes a 5-day kayaking, sailing or biking trip through the San Juan Islands and intentional time spent at Camp Orkila. Applicants should have documented skill in sea kayaking, bike touring or sailing, experience leading groups in the outdoors and be comfortable camping and cooking in the backcountry. Note: staff may lead a combination of LDI and Expedition courses during the summer season.

 

Logistics Assistant

Starting at $38/day
Minimum age 18

The Logistics Assistants provides crucial support to the Logistics Manager and staff instructors. Logistics Assistants support in packing out food and gear for all overnight trips and expedition courses, maintaining our fleet of boats and equipment and working to keep our Outtrip building running smoothly.

Logistics Manager

Starting at $300/week
Minimum age 21 (strongly preferred)

Key member of the Teen Expedition director team that supports the functions of overnight, day trip and large scale expeditions programing. They are responsible for planning and organizing trip packing (food and gear) for all programs and the ordering of food & equipment while overseeing the maintenance of all trip gear. This position requires experience with expedition programs and strong organizational and logistical skills.

 

Expedition Trip Leader

Starting at $42/day
Minimum age 21 (strongly preferred)

Orkila offers 1, 2 and 4-week expedition courses. Expedition Trip leaders spend a night in camp with their participants before heading out into the backcountry for the length of their course. Aside from ensuring the physical and emotional safety of their group, Expedition trip leaders are also responsible for delivering expedition programming and creating a unique and engaging experience for their participants. Trip leaders should have documented experience in sea kayaking or bike touring, be comfortable cooking and camping in the backcountry and have experience working with teens. note: staff may lead a combination of LDI and Expedition courses during the summer season.

 

Sailing Trip Leader

Starting at $45/day
Minimum age 21 (strongly preferred)

Skilled applicants capable of leading 1 to 2 week sailing expeditions throughout the San Jan Islands aboard J-24 and Soling sailboats; teaching technical sailing skills, camping skills, and peer leadership skills, while creating a physically and emotionally safe environment for a group of teenagers. Applicants must have extensive sailing experience, are comfortable sailing long distances on open water, and have keel boat experience. Applicants are strongly encouraged to have current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certifications. note: staff may lead a combination of LDI and Expedition courses during the summer season.

 

Expeditions Assistant Director

Starting at $300/week
Minimum age 21 (strongly preferred)

The Assistant Teen Director works with the Teen Expedition director team and supports instructors leading expedition courses. They work with instructors to plan routes, develop teen leadership curriculum and support the development of teen participants. The Expeditions Assistant Director also provides coaching and feedback for instructors and supports the day-to-day operations of the Teen Expedition Program. Strong applicants will have experience working in the expedition or guiding field, have skills in sailing, biking or sea kayaking and have strong leadership ability.
